As a car ages, its plastic headlight lens covers tend to fog and yellow, which can reduce the amount of light that hits the road. Though it’s not as routine as an oil change or a tire rotation, replacing fogged lenses is no less critical maintenance for car owners. The high cost of replacement, however, has begotten a cottage industry of headlight restoration kits, sold at all major automotive supply stores. Their manufacturers say the products can remove the discoloration and return a headlight to like-new condition. That is, if you can get them to work. A few years ago, I used an off-the-shelf product to clean the yellowed lens covers on my family’s 1996 Chrysler Town & Country. It had little effect, and I had the entire headlight assemblies replaced for $465. |
